See Different, Think Different, Do Different

I want you to ask yourself; do you take the same route to work everyday? Do you take the same route to the gym? What about to the supermarket? Or to your local pubs? I certainly do. Humans are creatures of habit. We love consistency and when we find the quickest way to get from A to B, we stick to it. Now I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, but when you work in a creative space, consistency and familiarity can breed complacency.

With that in mind, check out this experiment conducted by English mentalist and illusionist, Derren Brown.

The main takeaway that I get from this as a creative, is that we never know when or where our next bit of inspiration is going to come from, consciously or subconsciously. In order to tap into this, take a different way to work, listen to different types of music, watch a TV show or a movie that you wouldn't ordinarily watch, go somewhere new on the weekend and at the very least, look up from your smart phones when you're on the bus or train on the way to work. Open your eyes and look around, because you never know what you may find or what you may see.

What it comes down to is this - in order to create different things, we need to do and see different things.
